Gold in the Cupboard: When Value Isn’t Meltable
A vintage LAPD mug with 22kt trim in an old post got me thinking about the gold I keep tucked away—the kind that isn’t meltable, sellable, or wearable, but priceless all the same.
Gold isn’t just metal—it’s memory. And sometimes the most valuable pieces aren’t the ones you wear, sell, or melt. They’re the ones that stay tucked away in a safe place because the story matters more than the shine.
The Chain My Dad Had Made
Years ago, my dad gathered up old gold scraps—little pieces from here and there, nothing fancy on their own. He took them to a close friend who was a dental artist, the kind who sculpted crowns and bridges with the kind of precision most people never see. He melted the scraps down and cast them into a fine chain. Then my dad paired it with a gemstone he’d picked up on his travels abroad.
It wasn’t store-bought.
It wasn’t mass-produced.
It was crafted with intention, memory, and love.
One of the best gifts I’ve ever received.
Why I Don’t Wear Jewelry Anymore
I wish I were the kind of person who could wear jewelry every day and keep it safe. But life has a way of knocking things loose—literally.
- A gold pearl ring stolen.
- Pearl earrings lost after I slammed my head into an open car hatch at the airport.
- Silver dollars my dad gave the kids stolen by a babysitter.
- And the hardest loss: the gold ring with the heart-shaped emerald my mom worked and saved for.
After that, I stopped wearing anything precious. Not because I didn’t love it—because I couldn’t bear to lose another piece of someone I loved.
So my dad’s handcrafted chain sits in a box in my safe place. Not forgotten. Not neglected. Just protected.
When Gold Becomes a Story Instead of an Asset
People talk about gold like it’s a commodity—melt value, spot price, karat weight. And yes, sometimes that’s the logic that matters.
But sometimes gold is:
- a memory
- a moment
- a person
- a story you’re not ready to let go of
My dad’s chain isn’t meltable.
It isn’t sellable.
It isn’t wearable.
But it’s priceless.
A Toast to the Things We Keep
So here’s to the gold in the cupboard—the pieces we don’t list, don’t melt, don’t flip for profit.
Here’s to the gifts made by hand, the stories carried in metal, the memories tucked into safes and drawers because they matter too much to risk.
Some gold is for selling.
Some gold is for melting.
But some gold is for keeping—because it holds the people we love.
