After the Dust: The Ending I Believe Is True
After the Dust: The Ending I Believe Is True
What if the part we’ve all accepted as the ending… was never meant to be the ending at all?
We’ve heard it for years — in songs, in quiet thoughts, in moments when life feels like it’s slipping through our fingers.
Everything fades.
Everything passes.
Everything turns to dust.
But it always leaves me wanting the real ending.
Because long before songs were written about dust, there was another truth spoken:
“Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground
and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.”
— Genesis 2:7
Dust was never the end of the story.
It was the beginning.
And breath — not wind — is what gave it meaning.
There’s another place where time and change are acknowledged:
“To everything there is a season,
and a time for every purpose under heaven.”
— Ecclesiastes 3:1
Yes, things shift.
Yes, seasons turn.
Yes, life moves in ways we don’t always understand.
But movement isn’t the same as meaninglessness.
And change isn’t the same as loss.
Because what is formed once… can be formed again.
After the dust, we are put together again.
Maybe not in the same way.
Maybe not in the same time.
But not lost.
Not forgotten.
Not reduced to nothing.
There is something more — something deeper than what we can see in the moment.
This song has always spoken to me — and to an entire generation, young and old alike. But I’ve always felt the ending was incomplete.
Over time, I found myself wanting to add something to it — a verse that reflects the hope I hold onto.
And that changes the ending.
The question has been asked before…
We are more than dust and wind,
more than what the moment shows,
through the change and through the loss,
something deeper always grows.
When the dust is finally still,
and the waiting finds its end,
we are held and formed again —
more than dust has ever been.
